Cons

  • To say the ads are obtrusive is an understatement
  • Overall design and user interface is downright ugly

Chess Free is a completely free version of Chess for Android devices. Users simply download and install the game to start playing. In this version, players receive a barebones version of chess, which isn't necessarily a problem. An individual that wants to load chess and play against a CPU or friend will love this game. More detailed and feature-rich versions of chess are available for Android devices, though.

After installing Chess Free, players find themselves at the main menu. They're able to select from various options, including single player or multiplayer. It's possible to access saved games and the Settings menu as well. A simple tutorial is available to new players, including useful tips about how the app itself works. Otherwise, there's nothing left to do but start a game of chess and attempt to beat the CPU or other player.

Chess Free features local multiplayer only, so there are no lobbies. Also, the app features a solid chess experience with an extremely ugly design. Most chess games for Android look much better than this one. It doesn't help that the entire experience is hampered by ads. Although it's commendable the app is technically free, the number and frequency of these ads can be too much in some cases.

As a chess game, Chess Free gets the game itself right and proper. Each piece moves as it should, and the core game of chess doesn't feature any issues. The app itself, however, remains poorly designed and contains a frustrating amount of ads. Better chess games are available on Android devices. In fact, many of those games feature better design and come with more features, including online multiplayer.
